Lawrence area in severe thunderstorm watch

The National Weather Service has issued a severe thunderstorm watch through 7 p.m. Tuesday afternoon for most of eastern Kansas, including the Lawrence area.

The watch includes 37 counties in Kansas, including Douglas, Johnson, Shawnee, Osage and Franklin counties in the Lawrence area.

The short-term forecast showed that showers and scattered thunderstorms were continuing over parts of east central Kansas, mainly to the southeast of a line from Herington and Eskridge to Topeka and Lawrence, according to the National Weather Service.

Forecasters said the precipitation was moving to the northeast about 40 mph. The stronger storms were expected to bring some hail and gusty winds.

Forecasters said the primary threat from the storms will be large hail and deadly lightning. Damaging straight-line winds will also be possible through the early evening.
