Donated pool passes to be given out

Roger Hill Volunteer Center will distribute more than 2,000 passes to city swimming pools through 32 agencies serving low-income or at-risk youths. The money to purchase the passes was set up by the Marion J. Mengel trust, with additional contributions by United Way of Douglas County and Lawrence Parks & Recreation Aquatics Division.

Mengel began purchasing swim passes for youths in 1990. After her death in 1994, a trust was established to continue the program.

Fambrough to headline charity golf tournament

Former KU football coach Don Fambrough is lining up behind 125 children at Brookcreek Learning Center.

Fambrough will be the celebrity host of the sixth-annual Brookcreek Charity Golf Tournament June 27 at the Alvamar public course, 1611 St. Andrews Drive.

Brookcreek is an early-intervention center that provides a structured learning program for children.

Tournament organizer Deb Renick said this year’s event was important because the center’s programs at two Lawrence elementary schools were slated for closure. That will leave only two Brookcreek facilities in the community.

Tickets to a dinner and silent auction at the tournament are available by contacting Renick at 842-4858.

Registration starts at noon and tournament play begins at 1 p.m., she said.
