Light pollution

To the editor:

It’s disappointing that the county gave Heritage Baptist Church permission to flood a large flag “and the night sky” with six beams of light. Commissioner Charles Jones got it right when he voted against this ruling and spoke out against light pollution. Light pollution, caused by obtrusive outdoor lighting that casts light upward into the sky or into the horizontal plane, is a real problem. It prevents us from seeing the beauty of the night sky, and it represents wasted energy. I hope the county will in fact develop lighting standards, including standards that prevent needless light pollution.
