No-name park offers temporary tribute

An East Lawrence park will remain nameless — no matter what its sign says.

A newly painted sign put up last week at the city park, at the southwest corner of 19th Street and Haskell Avenue, unofficially proclaims it “Colley Park.”

The sign is the handiwork of former co-workers of Larry Colley, who retired last month after 35 years as an employee of the maintenance division of Lawrence Parks and Recreation. The division’s shop is next door.

Colley said he probably handcrafted and painted most of the signs that identify dozens of other city parks.

“But not that one,” Colley said Tuesday, laughing.

Fred DeVictor, the city’s director of parks and recreation, said he hadn’t decided what would happen to the perpetrators of the renaming caper. Colley, though, will remain in the clear.

“We’ll be putting in a bench for him in South Park,” DeVictor said.

No word yet on who will be painting it.

Schools

Lawrence elementary enrollment today

Enrollment is today for about 5,000 Lawrence public school elementary students.

Julie Boyle, the district’s director of communications, said most of the 15 elementary schools would be open for enrollment and fee payment from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Some buildings will have evening hours, she said.

Returning students who pre-enrolled should have received fee payment information in the mail.

New students will need birth certificates, immunization records and a physical exam if they are under age 9 or involved in athletics.

More information is available on the district’s Web site, www.usd497.org, including school hours, boundary maps, supply lists and calendars.

Chancellor on jury duty

Kansas University Chancellor Robert Hemenway will report to work this morning at the courthouse, not the campus.

Hemenway is one of 12 jurors in the Douglas County District Court trial of a 49-year-old Topeka man charged with robbing Bath & Body Works, 3102 Iowa.

The chancellor knew he possibly would be called to jury duty this week, so he cleared his calendar, said Todd Cohen, a KU spokesman.

“He’s always pretty busy, but this is better than other times,” Cohen said. “Better than the first week of school.”

The trial began Monday and ended Tuesday afternoon, but jurors couldn’t reach a verdict Tuesday and will resume deliberations this morning.
