Against Wal-Mart

To the editor:

The recent issue of building a second Wal-Mart in northwest Lawrence has been brought the community’s attention. Having a Wal-Mart at Sixth and Wakarusa may sound like a good idea to some people, but personally, I think it is a bad idea because it is right next to a high school and so close to large neighborhoods.

Would you really like your high school students to be hanging out at Wal-Mart during their lunch hour and after school? Having a Wal-Mart in northwest Lawrence will produce traffic congestion, and the roads aren’t adequate for the amount of traffic that will be produced. Lawrence is known for great things, including the University of Kansas, award-winning schools, and now the Dole Institute of Politics. When people come from Topeka and western Kansas to Lawrence, do you think seeing a Wal-Mart strikes their attention?

Also, having a Wal-Mart at Sixth and Wakarusa is convenient to some people in northern Lawrence, but is it that hard to take the extra effort and time to go to the Wal-Mart on south Iowa Street? In conclusion, a Wal-Mart should not be built at Sixth and Wakarusa because it is just going to make traffic worse in northwest Lawrence.
