To the editor:

I would like to respond to Matt Montgomery’s letters, printed on July 5 and July 16.

I knew immediately from the tone you set in your first letter that you weren’t a family man.

In that letter, you were spewing negativity toward the impending swimming pool issue. You know nothing about it. Except that a new pool would cost you, as a homeowner, additional taxes. Our children deserve a safe, functional swimming pool. The kids could not even get in the pool this morning for swimming lessons. The water was too murky because of a mechanical failure, and the pool manager did not want the kids to swim in filth. Let’s keep our fingers crossed that the pool will be filtered, by opening time, at 1 p.m. It should be close to 100 degrees by then.

Now, in your second letter, you want us to feel sorry for you because you pay too much in taxes for our schools. You go on to say that you have no kids here in the school system. So what? When you decided to become a property owner, you chose the additional responsibility that includes taxes.

Circulate all the petitions you want to, Mr. Montgomery. It will make no difference. What does matter is our children and the quality of life we want for them. The money is secondary to that pursuit. If you haven’t figured that out yet, you will. And when you do, I hope that you will find a community to live in with no families, kids, schools, pools, or anything else that would infringe on single male existence.
