Spill closes N. Iowa lane

A dump truck rolled Monday morning on North Iowa Street, spilling a load of debris into the road and closing one lane of traffic for nearly three hours.

The truck, a 1992 Freightliner belonging to Civil Development, 450 N. Iowa, rolled as it went north on Iowa around a curve at Lakeview Road, said Sgt. Mike Pattrick, a Lawrence Police Department spokesman.

The truck was carrying soil, debris and concrete chunks. Pattrick said it appeared the driver tried to take the curve too quickly.

17-year-old dodges delivery of warrant

Officers scoured an east Lawrence neighborhood shortly before noon Monday looking for a 17-year-old who fled after they tried to serve him with a warrant in the 600 block of Delaware Street.

Deputies from the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office came to the home and were told he had just left on foot. A Lawrence Police officer nearby made contact with a young man, and as they were talking he ran away, said Sgt. Mike Pattrick, a spokesman for the Lawrence Police Department.

A group of officers — including the sheriff’s German shepherd, Gero — spent about 45 minutes looking for the juvenile, but they didn’t find him, Pattrick said.

Pattrick said the teen was wanted for a probation violation, but he said he didn’t know the underlying charge.

Owner of dog attacked by pit bull plans to sue

The owner of a Yorkshire terrier that was attacked by a pit bull a week ago in North Lawrence said she planned to file a lawsuit against the pit bull’s owners.

Barbara Haller, owner of Stormin’ Norman, disputed the recent claim by the dog’s owners, the Raytons, that their pit bull Gepetto is a family-friendly pet.

“It came to kill,” Haller said Monday. “He knew what he was doing.”

Police officials initially said the Yorkie was bitten on the rear legs and in the groin, but Haller said Monday that her dog also suffered injuries to its head and a front leg.

Golfers report gunshots

Two golfers reported bullets whizzing over their heads shortly before 5 p.m. Friday at River View Golf Course, 2102 N. 1500 Road, Eudora.

Sheriff’s deputies followed the sound of the gunshots, which led them to two 40-year-old men who were taking target practice about half a mile away, said Lt. Kathy Tate, a spokeswoman for the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office.

The men — one from Douglas County and another from Shawnee County — were on private property but didn’t have permission to be there, she said. Police didn’t arrest them but sent a report to Dist. Atty. Christine Kenney’s office for possible firearms charges.
