Tax target

To the editor:

I was looking over my 2002 real estate tax receipt and I wondered if anyone can tell me something.

Why am I, a single person with no children, charged as much on school taxes as someone with seven kids? I do not use any school facility, I have no children in my home, and I have no family with children in the school system here.

My school tax is over $800 a year. Why should I pay this high rate? I feel that if no children are in the school system, in a home, there should be a reduced rate of taxation. I feel like a $100-per-bedroom rate would be more appropriate than a huge cost to someone wishing not to have children. The current rate is very costly for someone who is not involved with the school system. I do feel everyone needs to pay something for a school system, but this high rate is very unfair and should be changed very soon.

Single people with no children are taxed higher at every level, and it’s time for a change. If someone chooses to have kids, then they need to be responsible to raise them, not someone with no children.
