Sebelius wants elder care supervision shifted

? Gov. Kathleen Sebelius is pushing for moving regulation of adult care homes from one agency to another.

Currently, the Kansas Department of Health and Environment monitors adult care facilities. Sebelius has proposed putting those functions into the Kansas Department on Aging. The plan requires the Legislature’s approval.

Efforts have been made in the past to reduce KDHE’s functions because some lawmakers think the agency has too large a mission, regulating numerous areas from nursing homes to pig farms.

But others have opposed placing regulation of adult care programs under the aging department because that agency doles out state and federal dollars for aging programs, and they don’t want the regulation and payout functions within the same department.
