Reward issued for Perry Post Office burglary

? Two overnight burglaries in downtown Perry — including one in a post office — have prompted the U.S. Postal Inspection Service to offer a $2,500 reward for information.

About $100 of envelopes and other postal supplies were taken from the Perry Post Office, Elm and Bridge streets, which was burglarized about 4 a.m. Thursday, said Jefferson County Sheriff Roy Dunnaway.

The thieves entered the lobby, which is always left open, then broke down a door to get to the postal supplies, he said. The thieves also tried to remove a safe, but only were able to tip it over, Dunnaway said.

Sometime between 4:30 a.m. and 5 a.m., the Golden Pizza restaurant, 600 E. Front St., was also burglarized. A cleaning crew left the restaurant shortly before 4:30 a.m., he said.

The thieves got away with about $500 in quarters from the restaurant’s video arcade game, he said. Dunnaway said there were no pry marks on the arcade.

Dunnaway said evidence at the scene indicated both burglaries were done by the same two people. A stolen pickup truck was used in both burglaries, Dunnaway said.

The stolen pickup truck was recovered at Roadside Park at U.S. 24 Highway east of Perry. The truck was seen about 30 minutes before the burglaries at the post office.

The postal inspection service is seeking information from the public about the burglary. A reward of up to $2,500 is being offered for information leading to the arrest and conviction of the suspects.

Those with information should contact Postal Inspector Shawn Ippolito at 913-266-2400.
