Warmer weather ahead

Say goodbye to the bitter cold, says a local weather forecaster.

The big chill that brought sub-zero temperatures to Lawrence on Wednesday and Thursday will give way to warmer weather this weekend, said Matt Makens, 6News meteorologist.

“Expect wind chills around zero today. It won’t be horrible, but quite a bit warmer than yesterday,” Makens said, referring to the minus 21-degree wind chill reading from Thursday morning.

The high Friday afternoon will be a comparatively balmy 28 degrees, under partly cloudy skies.

The mercury will sink back into the teens overnight, with the low reaching 15.

Saturday’s high will reach 45 under mostly sunny skies.

“Then late afternoon and early evening the clouds increase and tomorrow night we’ll have a 30 percent chance to see snow flurries,” Makens said. “No accumulation should be expected. “

Saturday night’s low will drop to 17. Sunday’s skies will start to clear off, with the high reaching 28.

Monday morning’s low will be 17, but the high will reach 50 by mid afternoon. Tuesday will start out with a low of 28, but temperatures will rise to 52 by the afternoon. Wednesday’s morning low will be 26, with the high reaching 46.

“After that, could be more snow,” Makens said.
