Abortion stand

To the editor:

Jan. 22, 2003, will be the 30th anniversary of Roe vs. Wade. Since 1973, more than 41 million legal abortions have been performed in the United States. Several questions come to mind when I think about the issue of abortion.

First, I am wondering why more babies aren’t put up for adoption. Many women would love to have a baby but cannot. Secondly, why is the damage done to women’s health by legal abortions kept under cover by the news media? Abortion can cause a host of problems. They make women more likely to suffer future reproductive problems, such as infertility, miscarriage and premature birth of later children. Research has linked abortion to ectopic pregnancy, the fastest-growing cause of maternal death in the United States.

Finally, I would like to respond to Archbishop Keleher’s stance against the promotion of abortion. I think it is wonderful and courageous. Abortion is the murder of innocent life and is incompatible with a sincere wish to live a truly Christian life. Additionally, young women should remember what will happen to them when they have abortions in their youth but no loving families in their old age.
