The new year begins today with most area city and county government offices closed. New Year’s holiday starts earlier for some public offices than for others.

These city and county offices will be closed today: Lawrence; Douglas County; Baldwin; DeSoto; Eudora; Tonganoxie; Oskaloosa and Ottawa.

Offices for Leavenworth and Jefferson counties also will be closed today.

Douglas County Senior Services meals program will not deliver today.

The Lawrence Transit System and the T Lift will not operate today.

The Lawrence Public Library will be closed today.

Lawrence residents whose normal trash pickup day is today or Thursday will be a day later this week.

The post office will not deliver mail today.

Normal operations for FedEx and UPS will be closed today.

Banks will be closed today.

The Journal World’s circulation department will be open from 4:30 a.m. to 10 a.m. today. The classified advertising department will be closed today.

Lawrence Parks and Recreation schedule is as follows:

South Park Recreation Center, East Lawrence Recreation Center, Community Building and Holcom Park Recreation Center, closed.

Eagle Bend Golf Course, regular hours.

Prairie Park Nature Center, closed.

Cemetery office, closed.

Lawrence Indoor Aquatic Center, closed.
