Legislature: Committee postpones in-state tuition vote

Topeka — A House committee Monday delayed voting on a bill that would give in-state tuition rates to students who grew up in Kansas with parents who are undocumented workers.

Last week, in sometimes tearful testimony, teenagers, teachers and Hispanic advocates told the committee that the more expensive out-of-state tuition was keeping many children of illegal immigrants from attending college.

Many of the youngsters said they had lived in Kansas most of their lives and were working on getting citizenship status.

On Monday, however, several members of the House Higher Education Committee said they sympathized with their situation but weren’t willing to allow them to pay in-state tuition rates.

A vote on the measure is scheduled for Wednesday.
