Deadline for comments on South Lawrence Trafficway extended
There’s still time to chime in with questions, comments or concerns about plans to finish the South Lawrence Trafficway.
The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers has extended its deadline for accepting public comments to March 3, said Bob Smith, the corps’ trafficway project manager. Smith made the announcement Tuesday afternoon, a day after the original 30-day comment period ended.
Officials chose to extend the deadline because Monday’s cut-off date fell on Presidents Day, a federal holiday, Smith said. Some individuals also said they simply needed more time to get their thoughts together.
Corps officials already have chosen a route for completing the controversial highway project but have yet to make their decision final.
The corps backs the Kansas Department Of Transportation’s plans to build a $110 million highway along a 32nd Street alignment, connecting U.S. Highway 59 south of Lawrence with Kansas Highway 10 near Noria Road, southeast of Lawrence.
The route would cut through the northern portion of the Baker Wetlands. The route is opposed by some American Indians, environmental groups and others.
Smith said corps officials were hoping to make their decision final — in the form of a record of decision — sometime in April.
