KU Hillel House, Lawrence Education Assn., the Roger Hill Volunteer Center and 21st Century Community Learning Centers are working together on a Read Across America project for the learning centers’ after-school programs at Woodlawn and Centennial schools. Read Across America is sponsored by the National Education Assn. as a celebration of Dr. Seuss and a way to promote reading to children. Volunteers will read Dr. Seuss stories to students in kindergarten through third grade. The Dr. Seuss reading hour will be from 4 p.m. to 5 p.m. March 4 at Woodlawn and from 4:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. March 7 at Centennial.

The project needs about 20 volunteers to read to about 80 children at the events. Volunteers will choose one story and children will travel around the room to hear the stories. The program also is collecting Dr. Seuss books to let each child in the program take one home. Additional books will be donated to the schools. Books can be dropped off at the volunteer center.
