‘Anti’ sentiment

To the editor:

In a letter to the J-W recently, it was purported that the quality of life in Lawrence is “going down the tubes.” Actually, Lawrence is highly rated by independent evaluation in nearly every criterion, particularly when it is compared to peer cities. However, it has also gained a statewide reputation as a “difficult” community due to a pervasive “anti” sentiment toward anything progressive or needed.

A vocal minority is all too willing to share the opinion that Lawrence is a rotten place to live and to commiserate with her latest class of “victims” or who- or whatever absurdity it will be next week. This negativism is rarely accompanied with suggestions for improvement that are rooted in pragmatism. Instead, “the uninformed” are offered some lowbrow solution of the “we all should park our SUVs and start pedaling” variety.

If one is really committed to making Lawrence a better place, how about putting down the “NO! We won’t grow!” picket sign, getting behind a broom or rake, and looking for opportunities in one’s own backyard? All that is required for a big improvement is a little initiative. The neighborhood would be better as a result and one could claim practical experience and insight for getting things done. Maybe then, one would be ready to address the issues affecting the community at large.

Lawrence is a fine place to live. Yet, it is a compelling irony that the few positive views expressed are from her visitors.
