Founder of Ms. magazine to speak at KU

Gloria Steinem, one of the most influential feminists in modern times, will speak next week at Kansas University.

Steinem will speak at 8 p.m. Monday at KU’s Lied Center. Following the lecture, Steinem will take questions from the audience.

The free event is part of the Student Lecture Series, coordinated by KU’s Student Union Activities and

Student Senate. Because seating is limited, vouchers are available in the SUA office, Level 4 of the Kansas Union, between 9 a.m. and 4 p.m. weekdays.

Steinem, who won fame as a journalist after working as a Playboy bunny in the 1960s and writing about it in an expose for Esquire magazine, went on to found Ms. magazine and become a human rights activist.

Steinem is still an editorial consultant and writer for Ms. magazine.

She has also helped found the Ms. Foundation for Women, the Women’s Action Alliance, the Coalition of Labor Union Women and the National Women’s Political Caucus, a non-partisan group devoted to advancing women of all races in elected and appointed offices.

She has been outspoken against child abuse, the death penalty and issues in Afghanistan, and she is president of Voters for Choice, a non-partisan political action committee that supports pro-choice candidates.
