Off the court

To the editor:

My letter concerns the hundred or so students that flocked the floor after the men’s basketball team beat Texas last Monday night.

Why did you rush the floor after beating a conference rival? Were you so surprised that we accomplished the feat? Did you not expect the team to rise to the challenge?

There was a time when fans only rushed the field of play when a truly significant upset had occurred. KU, fresh off of a Final Four and ranked in the top 25, should not have rushed the court.

We, as fans, should expect the Jayhawks to beat anyone that comes to Allen Fieldhouse. It is because of the spirit and enthusiasm of the fans that Kansas enjoys such a home court advantage. Please don’t tarnish it with asinine celebrations.

I am glad that the majority of the students in the north end zone remained in their seats and admonished their overly exuberant peers for their actions. Chants of “get off the court” made me smile and gave me hope. It seems these students recognize the history of the program. They understand that beating a conference rival at home is no reason to storm the court. We won every game in conference last year and no one stormed the court after any of those games. While we may not have the same personnel as we did last year, it still says Kansas on the chest.

At Kansas, we don’t storm the court.
