Health crisis

To the editor:

The subject of health care should be of concern to every American. I have recently become aware of the “rules” concerning those who cannot afford medical insurance. In the richest country in the world, it is shameful that only those with money can afford to be healthy.

I am acquainted with people here in Lawrence who, although they have made attempts, have not been able to get assistance with health care. I am especially concerned for those with mental illness or serious medical illnesses, some who could possibly die for lack of treatment. This is not an exaggeration; many are here in Lawrence.

I find myself desperately wanting and needing to change the health care system in the United States — not only access to medical treatment but medications, as well. It is outrageous the exorbitant fees demanded for medications that are often life-saving. Recently, a friend said only one of her medications costs $600 monthly. This is a medication she needs to keep her alive! She is not an isolated case as I hear daily of these prices.

I am angry with physicians and hospitals who turn away those who have no money or insurance. Have they forgotten the Hippocratic Oath? I do know that Lawrence Memorial Hospital does not refuse those with no funds. It is to be commended for its policy.

There is a desperate need for changes in health care. Many are fortunate to possess medical insurance. But, many of those on the other side of the fence were once in your shoes. Might you one day be in theirs?
