Basement fire damages community theater

A basement fire caused $15,000 in damage Monday night to the Lawrence Community Theatre, 1501 N.H.

There were no injuries, and the cause of the fire remained under investigation Monday night.

Someone called 911 shortly before 7 p.m. after spotting smoke coming from the building. Firefighters responded and found the smoke was coming from the building’s basement, said Mark Bradford, deputy chief of Douglas County Fire & Medical.

The fire was under control at 7:20 p.m. In all, 21 fire department members responded.

Volunteers needed to distribute posters

The Jayhawk Audubon Society is seeking volunteers to distribute posters promoting Kaw Valley Eagles Day at various locations throughout Lawrence.

The posters should be distributed before the Jan. 25 event.

Society selling birdseed

Jayhawk Audubon Society will offer its winter birdseed sale from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Feb. 7 at the Lawrence Senior Center, 745 Vt.

A variety of birdseed will be available, as well as bird feeders and wildlife-related books. All proceeds support the society.
