Salary excess

To the editor:

Shame on KU; shame on the “donors.” Mark Mangino, whose compensation package of $700,000 — about equal to 19 average teachers’ salaries in Kansas — gets a bonus of $20,000 for going to a bowl game. Football staffers will rake in $136,000 in bonus money.

At the same time, Judge Bullock has ruled that Kansas shortchanges public schools by $1 billion and the state can’t find the money to fund our higher education programs. Coaches get $136,000 in bonuses while KU students get a tuition hike and K-12 students get fee hikes.

Where will the contributors to these athletic bonuses — including Mangino’s new BMW — be when the Legislature considers a modest tax increase to fund education programs for Kansas students? My guess is they’ll be whining to their representatives about the enormous burden they must pay and how schools will just have to “tighten their belts.”

Where are our priorities?

Mark Desetti,
