Simon mentor

To the editor:

Strange that in the accounts of Sen. Paul Simon’s memorial service where many dignitaries were present and Sen. Edward Kennedy spoke (comparing his qualities of character to those of his brother, Robert Kennedy), no one seems to have recalled that as a very young man he was first inspired and personally encouraged toward a government career by Adlai Stevenson, then governor of Illinois. Sen. Simon’s contribution to the fascinating volume “As We Remember Adlai,” (in which he says “It is difficult … to put into words the impact Governor Stevenson had on me and thousands of my generation…”) will inform and interest the many who mourn his passing.

Mrs. Albert Bloch,
