Police investigating cause of injuries to homeless man

Lawrence police were trying to find out Tuesday if an injured man found near a downtown homeless shelter was a victim of foul play.

Alan Cannon, a 57-year-old homeless man, was found injured about 11:30 p.m. Monday just outside the Community Drop-In Center, 214 W. 10th, according to Police Sgt. Mike Pattrick.

Cannon was picked up by a private citizen and taken to Lawrence Memorial Hospital and was later airlifted to a Kansas City hospital, Pattrick said.

“We don’t know if he’s the victim of a crime yet or not,” Pattrick said.

Police did not yet have the specifics of his injuries.

The center shares space with the Lawrence Open Shelter, which provides refuge for people who are homeless, intoxicated and unable to visit the Salvation Army Shelter.

The Lawrence Open Shelter opened for the winter last week.
