Lions’ Lisher among city athletes honored

After another Class 6A state title for Olathe North, the All-Sunflower League football teams were released and several Lawrence High and Free State players were honored.

In all, six city players were named first-team all-league, highlighted by LHS senior Carl Lisher, who was named to the first team at both offensive line and linebacker.

Lisher, who also punted for the Lions, was one of the top offensive linemen on a team that went 7-3 and easily led the Sunflower League with 2,840 rushing yards. As a linebacker, he was a main cog in a defense that allowed just 15.8 points per game, including shutouts against Olathe South and Shawnee Mission East.

“He was an outstanding player for us,” LHS coach Dirk Wedd said. “I think he was very deserving offensively, and defensively he was probably our leading tackler.”

Others making first team were Lawrence High’s Josh Lawrence at defensive line and Jeff Colter at defensive back, and Free State’s Mark Case at offensive line, Dain Dillingham at wide receiver and Cole Douglas at linebacker.

Dillingham, who’s received offers from Kansas University and Minnesota to play football, caught 42 passes for 715 yards this season, scoring six receiving touchdowns and a rushing touchdown. He played most of the season despite injuries, including a strained knee and a lingering hamstring problem.

“He’s a tough kid,” FSHS coach Bob Lisher said. “A lot of people wouldn’t have played through the injuries he had.”

Five Firebirds and three Lions received second-team honors, and several more were named honorable-mention picks.

“There’s a lot of politics involved,” Wedd said. “You’re always disappointed that someone got left off, but overall, I think it was indicative of our football team.”
