Police suspect fugitive no longer in Lawrence

Lawrence Police are still looking for a fugitive who eluded a manhunt last week and drove across a golf course during his getaway, a police spokesman said.

Paul Richard Caswell, 31, is wanted for a Nebraska federal parole violation and was being watched by local police investigating a forgery and counterfeiting operation.

Although police don’t know where Caswell is, they don’t think he remains in the Lawrence area, Sgt. Mike Pattrick said.

“It’s typical for someone who is not from the jurisdiction to leave it as soon as they can,” Pattrick said of a fugitive’s behavior.

Caswell fled from police Nov. 25 while officers were watching him at the Ramada Inn, 2222 W. Sixth St. He allegedly got into a car and led police on a chase during which he drove across the Lawrence Country Club golf course.

He later abandoned the car and fled on foot to escape.

Snow enters forecast

Lawrence residents could see wet, heavy snowflakes falling today, but don’t expect the snow to pile up, 6News weather forecaster Ross Janssen said.

“It might stick in some grassy areas, but we aren’t expecting any accumulation,” Janssen said.

A rain-and-sleet mixture was forecast to begin after midnight Tuesday and become snow by 4 a.m. today, Janssen said. It will end by noon, he said.

The overnight low temperature was expected to be 32 and today’s high 38. Temperatures should warm into the low 40s Thursday but turn colder again Friday with a high of 34, Janssen said.

Snow and rain are expected today over much of eastern Kansas, according to the National Weather Service in Topeka.
