Small fees

To the editor:

Concerning the letter previously written about the parking meters downtown, I agree that it is frustrating to consistently return to your car when shopping. I disagree, however, that one should stop shopping downtown entirely. I spent this past summer in Europe and am thankful to be paying a mere couple of quarters every so often.

In England, for example, we had to pay 5 or 6 pounds for three hours of parking, that is near $10. I found that to be absurd. Parking tickets in Lawrence are only $2, unlike 30 pounds, and are incredibly simple to pay via the multiple yellow boxes in the downtown area. If you find it difficult to drop in $2 right when you get your ticket, don’t take it out on the parking departments. Citizens in Lawrence should be thankful of the small fees we pay for parking; other people have it worse.
