Comedian Cal

To the editor:

Warning: The following letter contains sarcasm, irony and trace amounts of wit. Those unable to have any sense of humor about themselves might not enjoy it. Sorry.

In recent letters, certain people have requested the ending of Cal Thomas. No, no, no! We cannot afford to lose this lone voice of reason, one of the finest liberal humorists in the entire country.

As a moderate (I know that’s a dirty word in letters these days, but I yam what I yam), I value those willing to satirize extreme beliefs at either end of the political spectrum. Cal Thomas’ uncanny ability to weed out the most laughable positions of right-wing extremism has given me pleasure for years now. The way he portrays himself as a true conservative columnist and then proceeds to fabricate the most stunningly illogical right-wing positions has brought many a moderate and liberal to their knees with laughter, and has, I hope, given many a conservative pause. In his own subtle way, Cal Thomas has been fighting the liberal fight for years.

Some people have attempted to convince me that Cal Thomas is actually serious in his columns, but this cannot be. Any examination of his writing shows inconsistencies and irrationalities so glaring they have to be deliberate. No, my friends, this is certainly the work of a liberal (or at least moderate) comic genius. I only wish we had a counterpart to put extreme liberals in their place. Perhaps Mr. Cuenca (an obvious moderate) could take the position.

Nat Twarog,

Lawrence
