Temperatures to soar to triple digits

Can you really fry an egg on a hot sidewalk?

This is the weekend to try — temperatures will hit 100 or above Saturday through Tuesday in the Lawrence area.

“It’s going to be nasty in the next couple of days,” said Matt Jacobs, 6News meteorologist. “It’s going to be hot. Very hot.”

It’s also going to be humid and muggy, making the hottest part of the weekend feel as hot as 105-110 degrees, Jacobs said.

“The jet stream will ridge over the Central Plains and that’s what’s going to give us the heat and allow us to warm up quickly,” he said.

The triple digit temperatures will cover most of the Central Plains in the next few days, from the Canadian border down to southern Oklahoma.

Friday’s high will be 96, with the heat index hitting 105 about 3 p.m. to 4 p.m. Overnight, the low will drop to 71, with mostly clear skies.

Saturday’s high will be 100, with the humidity putting the heat index at 110. Saturday’s overnight low will be 74.

Sunday’s temperature will climb to 101, with the heat index around 110. Monday’s high will be 100, with a heat index of 105 to 110. And Tuesday’s high will be 101, with a heat index of 105-110.

The overnight temperatures Sunday through Tuesday will drop into the mid 70s. The next chance for rain is Tuesday night.
