OSHA investigating death at area oil field

Investigators from the Occupational Saftety and Health Administration and the Douglas County sheriff’s department were at an oil field in southeast Douglas County Friday afternoon where a 33-year-old Osawatomie man died Thursday.

According to the Douglas County sheriff’s department, Brent Hesse, an employee for Town Oil Co., Paola, collapsed about 2:20 p.m. Thursday in an oil field east of Baldwin City at 1934 N. 250 Road.

Lt. Ken Massey says Hesse and three other workers were performing maintenance on an oil pump when Hesse died. The cause of his death is unknown.

An autopsy is scheduled for Friday afternoon. Massey says preliminary results could be released later Friday.
