Loyal fans

To the editor:

What comes first — the chicken or the egg? This age-old question fits the situation at Memorial Stadium quite well. They say nothing puts butts in the seats like winning. But, isn’t it possible that playing in front of a packed stadium of cheering fans just might give the football Jayhawks the boost they need? After all, they call it home field advantage for a reason.

Coach Mark Mangino, his assistants and all the players are pouring their hearts into building something special at KU — a program we can all take pride in. They deserve the same support shown to their basketball counterparts. It’s time for the fans to take one for the team. Let’s prove that true Jayhawk supporters are all-weather birds, not fair-weather fowl. And that starts with the purchase of season tickets. I’m buying them.

A full season of Big 12 action comes at a very reasonable price. Tailgate or meet up with old friends, family and alumni. There’s nothing like a crisp fall day on campus. We have to match the commitment of the players and coaches. We can all be part of building this program. All we have to do is show up. Let’s get on the bandwagon now, because I truly believe this is the start of something special.

And to those who say you’ll support the team when they start winning, I offer this: Shame on you. Because being there in the stands, cheering them on plays a big part in creating that winning tradition.

J. Chambers,

Lawrence
