4-H for everyone

To the editor:

Several times when I attended the Douglas County Free Fair, I overheard people viewing the exhibits saying, “I wish we lived in the country so our kids could be in 4-H.” When I was growing up, my parents thought the same thing, so I never joined and missed out on a wonderful opportunity. Luckily for our son, someone directed me to the 4-H office at the extension center, where I learned that any child age 7 or older living in the city or county could join a 4-H club.

Our son has finished his sixth year in 4-H, and our entire family has benefited from the experience. All of us would agree the best part of 4-H is developing friendships with other families in the organization. There are many projects that members may choose to work on throughout the year.

Our son’s projects this year are quite diverse including art, archery, photography, leadership and rocketry. Family participation is one of the most important aspects of 4-H. We look forward to seeing each other at monthly meetings, working together on projects and supporting our children’s efforts during the year. The fair is a big event for all 4-H families, but 4-H members work hard throughout the year doing community service and leadership within their projects and as a club.

I encourage any families that are interested in 4-H to call the Douglas County Extension Office. There will also be a 4-H Festival on Sunday, Sept. 21, in Building 21 at the Douglas County 4-H Fairgrounds with numerous project displays and information about 4-H.
