Budigs establish KU social welfare teaching award

Former Kansas University Chancellor Gene Budig and his wife, Gretchen, have established a second teaching award at KU’s School of Social Welfare.

Associate Professor K. Jean Peterson, who directs the school’s practicum program, and Professor Charlie Rapp, director of the school’s Office of Mental Health and Research Training, have been named this year’s award recipients.

Dean Ann Weick announced Thursday the new award will be given annually to social welfare faculty members who demonstrate excellent teaching skills.

The award is similar to one the Budigs established in 1998.

It was made possible through a combination of gifts to the KU Endowment Association from the Budigs and previous gifts made in honor of Budig when he left KU in 1994. Budig was KU’s chancellor for 13 years.
