Shelter offers homeless place to stay during day

An afternoon shelter for the homeless will open today at First Christian Church, 10th and Kentucky streets.

Hilda Enoch, chairwoman of the Lawrence Coalition on Homeless Concerns, said the shelter would be open from 3 p.m. to 9 p.m. every day in August.

“We’re grateful, right now, for even this one month that we can offer six hours a day out of the oppressive summer Kansas heat,” she said.

Volunteers are needed to staff the shelter. To help, call volunteer coordinator Steve Ozark at 841-5335 or 841-2800.

Lawrence retiree to sing at Royals game

Arvid Grover is adding another sport to his “Star-Spangled Banner” resume.

Grover, the World War II veteran who sang the national anthem at the Jan. 15 Kansas University men’s basketball game, will sing it again before Sunday’s Kansas City Royals game.

Grover, 80, lives in Lawrence. He sang patriotic songs while in the Navy during war bond rallies, and occasionally sang jazz standards with the bands at USO shows in St. Paul, Minn.

The Royals play Tampa Bay on Sunday. The first pitch is at 1:05 p.m.
