Lawrence School Board
Budget forces board to eye layoffs
Bottom Line
The board will vote on a resolution to notify 67 certified educators that their contracts won’t be renewed for the 2003-2004 school year.
Mary Rodriguez, executive director of human resources, said one-fourth of these employees might be hired back pending availability of funding. Two-thirds of these staffing cuts are at the elementary level.
Background
This would be the second consecutive year the board has turned to layoffs to balance the budget.
Last year, 65 staff received pink slips as part of a plan that called for more than $3 million in budget cuts and fee increases. Approximately half of those educators returned to positions in the district.
