Firebirds win J.C. Invitational

? Free State High’s Alan Martinez went 4-0 to win the No. 2 singles title, sparking the Firebirds to a first-place finish Saturday in the Junction City Invitational.

Martinez won the championship match, 8-3.

“This was a tremendously successful day and our best tournament team title in the history of the program,” FSHS tennis coach Jon Renberger said. “Everyone played well and we pulled off a few big upsets, highlighted by (Ben) Cropp’s pool play win over Manhattan’s top player.”

Cropp knocked off the multiple-state qualifier, 9-7, in No. 1 singles en route a 3-1 record and third-place finish.

In doubles action, Free State’s No. 1 team of Eyad Safadi and Matt Schwabauer went 3-1, winning the third-place match against Salina Central, 8-1.

Bryan Maygers and Eric Sheu also went 3-1, but their lone loss came in the No. 2 double championship, 8-5, against Salina South.

The Firebirds finished with 34 points, ahead of Salina South (25) and Salina Central (22) in the eight-team tournament.
