Dream is here
To the editor:
Roy Williams’ decision was initially upsetting. In my opinion, it was a selfish betrayal of his team, university, state and conference. However, I’m now confident Kansas University basketball will continue its tradition of excellence, and I can’t help but feel a little bit sorry for Roy. It’s said that “going home is never the same.” Time will tell, but I believe Roy will eventually realize his “dream” job was in Lawrence.
No one can be faulted for wanting to be closer to family. However, with available resources, I don’t think distance from relatives was a big problem for Roy. His bottom line was greater allegiance to the UNC family than the KU family. This is difficult to understand. At KU, Roy was patriarch. He was well on the way to a 30-year legacy in the mold of Wooden and Rupp. Fifteen years at North Carolina will bring just another coaching career in the shadow of Dean Smith.
Roy should never have proclaimed career-long loyalty to KU and his players when it wasn’t in his heart. Placing himself above the team sends a clear signal to Carolina players considering an early NBA career, something few Jayhawks ever did.
To the Jayhawk players: Don’t let Roy’s bad decision lead you into one. Remain committed to each other. You are destined for continued success. Your new coach will be fortunate to inherit a premier program with abundant talent. You have the opportunity to start a coaching legacy, something Roy didn’t finish.
