Health: Event to encourage organ donation

The Kansas University chapter of Public Relations Student Society of America will bring an organ donation awareness event to Wescoe Beach, in front of Wescoe Hall, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday. Students and faculty can participate in the Operation board game tournament, win prizes and sign donor registration cards.

The goal of the campaign is to encourage students to talk with their families about donating organs and to increase public awareness about organ donor needs. President Bush proclaimed April as National Donate Life Month.

Arts: Children, families invited to paint prairie mural

The Lawrence Arts Center invites children and their parents to help paint a scenic mural of the prairie on the north side of the center. The workshop to paint the mural will be from 1 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. today.

The mural was made possible by a “Kansas Good to Great Award” grant provided by the Self-Help Network Center for Community Support and Research at Wichita State University and Kansas University Work Group on Health Promotion and Community Development.

Big Brothers Big Sisters will team up with the center to allow mentoring matches in the program to paint the wall. The fee to paint the wall is $26 per pair, although scholarships are available. The rain date is May 4. To enroll, call Laura Rose at 843-2787.

Community: Firefighters to raise funds for charity

The International Association of Fire Fighters Local 1596 will raise money for the association’s Burn Foundation from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. Tuesday at Applebee’s Bar and Grill, 3900 W. Sixth St.

Firefighters will help Applebee’s wait staff, who will donate their tips to the foundation. The restaurant will donate a portion of food sales from that night. A fire truck will be on display at the restaurant.

The Burn Foundation is the largest nongovernmental source of funding for burn research and sponsors the firefighters’ National Children’s Burn Camp for burn victims. It also provides money for adult burn survivor retreats, burn prevention and education materials and financial assistance to more than 40 regional burn camps.
