Bishop Seabury to have open house

The public is invited to catch a glimpse tonight of the rapid evolution of a Lawrence tennis club into an Episcopal school.

“We want people to come out to our ‘open building,’ whether that’s neighbors or people interested in sending their kids here,” said Chris Carter, headmaster of Bishop Seabury Academy.

Carter will open doors to the former Alvamar Racquet and Swim Club, 4120 Clinton Parkway, from 4:30 p.m. to 6 p.m. for tours and to answer questions.

The $1.6 million renovation of Alvamar started in December and should be finished by July, he said.

It will allow Bishop Seabury to move out of the old Kaw Valley elementary school building at 1411 E. 1850 Road. It’s been home to the academy’s junior high and high school students since opening in 1997.

Half of Alvamar’s four indoor tennis courts are being transformed into a dozen classrooms, library and computer lab. The other half will become a regulation gymnasium with a large stage. The club’s pro shop will be in the school’s commons area.

Bishop Seabury Academy is preparing to move into the former Alvamar Racquet and Swim Club on Clinton Parkway. Headmaster Chris Carter, left, and employees of Fritzel Construction, Mark Richardson, right, and Clinton Whitaker walked through the future school building Thursday morning. The academy will have an open house tonight at the site.

A smaller building nearby will house fine arts classes.

In the main structure, steel studs frame each of the academic and athletic areas.

“It’s a great deal more space than we have now,” Carter said. “And it will be better designed for our students.”

He said the renovation plan was revised after it became clear a tier of second-floor classrooms wouldn’t fit the budget. The 8.1-acre site includes land for future expansion, Carter said.

Bishop Seabury’s enrollment stands at 105, but is expected to reach 115 when the new facility opens Aug. 20. The official dedication is scheduled for Sept. 19.
