Athletes of the Week

Adrian Ludwig

Free State

Class: Senior

Sport: Boys track

The week: In a field with some of the best prep runners in the Midwest, Ludwig asserted himself as one to watch at the Kansas Relays last Friday. He placed third in the 800-meter run, running a personal best 1:55.8, just one second off the school record — and the fastest time for any Kansas high schooler. As if that weren’t enough, Ludwig anchored the Firebirds’ distance medley relay, which was seventh, and their 4×400 relay. Saturday, he anchored the 4×800 relay, finishing fourth.

Comment: “He had a really good meet,” FSHS coach Steve Heffernan said. “He’s got deceptive speed, but he’s very strong. He’s a really good athlete, not just a runner. You have to be a very good athlete to win the 800, not just fast.”

Joey Donahue

Eudora

Class: Junior

Sport: Boys track

The week: Donahue was a one-man track team at the Eudora Invitational Friday. He won the 200-meter dash and the 400 — both by .1 seconds — and anchored the 4×100 relay to fourth place. Donahue also claimed the long jump crown with a leap of 20-feet-113/4. That was a foot better than the rest of the field. He’ll compete in four individual events at today’s Cardinal Relays, including the 100, 200, 400 and long jump, which could give a real indication of how good he can be. Why? Donahue’s just now getting healthy after fighting off illnesses the past few weeks.

Comment: “He missed some workouts early in the season,” Cardinals coach Phil Katzenmeier said. “I think he’s just now starting to get in shape.”
