Asleep at switch
To the editor:
Who’s minding the store? After two days of reading the Roy-bashers and finger-pointers on various sports pages, I was shaken by the comment in the April 16 Journal-World that the search committee consists of Drue Jennings, Robert Hemenway and senior athletic department administrators Doug Vance and Richard Konzem. Jennings added that input would be sought from members of the Kansas University Athletic Corp. board, the same board whose chairman was recently quoted as admitting they had not looked into the relationship Al Bohl had with Roy Williams.
Where are our alumni? Have they been on the athletic corporation Board or the Kansas Board of Regents? Who appoints them? To whom are they accountable? I know the governor appoints the regents. I have mistakenly assumed the athletic corporation board served to represent the alumni to oversee the operation of our athletic programs. We now learn that Hemenway is not the only one who has been snoozing. Please, Drue, don’t seek input from that group. Seek an apology. They have slept through their watch.
As alumni, we need to stand up and demand competent leadership. Hemenway gave Roy little choice. If he were to have stayed it would have been written that Roy cut a deal to have Al Bohl fired, and I believe Roy wanted to distance himself from the Bohl scenario. Roy took the high road. He chose to go home to North Carolina when he could have said he was leaving a disorganized ship. We will survive. We have a great group of players returning and will have a great coach.
Dr. Bud Gollier,
