LHS performers reap honors at festivals

Musicians at Lawrence High School are hitting all the right notes.

Seven LHS musical groups performing Thursday at the music festival at Washburn Rural High School earned a “superior” rating.

The groups: Combined Girls Chorus, Combined Boys Chorus, A Cappella Choir, Full Orchestra, String Orchestra, Symphonic Band and Concert Band.

Meanwhile, the LHS Concert Band, Symphonic Band and Jazz Band recently traveled to San Antonio to participate in the Heritage Music Festival.

The symphonic and jazz bands earned a gold award at the festival, while Concert Band received a silver award.

Car wreck sends passenger to hospital

A Spring Hill woman was injured about 1:30 p.m. Friday in a two-car collision nine miles south of Lawrence, the Kansas Highway Patrol said.

Evelyn G. Fennel, 58, was taken by ambulance to Lawrence Memorial Hospital where she was treated and released, a hospital nursing supervisor said.

Fennel was a passenger in a 1999 Honda driven by Eileen K. Cunningham, 56, Spring Hill, according to a Highway Patrol report.

The Honda was eastbound on U.S. Highway 56 when it was struck by a 1991 Toyota that was westbound on the highway attempting to turn south onto U.S. Highway 59, the Highway Patrol said.

The driver of the Toyota, James Le Wayne Mietchen, 25, Wellsville, and a passenger, Tiffany Mietchen, 3, Wellsville, were not hurt.

School’s island festival to feature raffle, auction

Ottawa — Sacred Heart Church and its school will have a spring festival, “Island Oasis,” from 6:30 p.m. to 11 p.m. Saturday in the Parish Center, Fourth and Cedar Streets, Ottawa.

The festival includes an all-you-can-eat buffet, games, music, raffles and a silent auction. Chiefs and racing tickets, weekend get-away packages, condo stays and theme baskets are a few of the items being auctioned. Auction participants must be 21 or older. Tickets are available for a donation by calling the school at (785) 242-2174.

University sets exams

Kansas University has announced the following final examinations:

  • Sarah Ubel, communication studies, “Credibility Enhancing and Lessening Strategies Utilized by Attorneys in the Courtroom: An Exploration of Use and Gender Differences,” 4 p.m. Monday, 116K Bailey Hall.
  • Lisa M. Brady, history, “War Upon the Land: Nature and Warfare in the American Civil War,” 5:30 p.m. Monday, Alcove E, Kansas Union.
