Banquet will honor math contest winners

Lawrence students won awards for their participation in an annual mathematics competition April 5 at Kansas University.

The exams consisted of five questions and took 40 minutes to complete.

Lawrence winners are:

  • Fifth and sixth grade — First place, Anjali Datta, Quail Run School; second place (tie), Tina Tian, Hillcrest School, and Ruth Byers, Raintree Montessori School; third place (tie), Kyle Consolver and Betty Zhang, Hillcrest.
  • Junior high — First place, Deepyaman Datta; second place, Jong-Hoon Ahn; third place, Seungjim Choi, all of Southwest Junior High School.
  • High school — Second place, Nathaniel Twarog, Free State High School.

Geological Survey plans public field trip

Rocks and fossils in northwestern Kansas will be the focus of a field trip May 3 sponsored by the Kansas Geological Survey.

The trip, open to the public, will provide an overview of the geology of the Smoky Hills and the High Plains. It includes stops at Monument Rocks, Lake Scott State Park and the Smoky Valley Ranch Preserve.

The trip will depart at 8:30 a.m. from Oakley and return around 5:30 p.m.

Baker wellness festival offers health screenings

Baldwin — Free health screenings and educational materials will be available April 26 at Baker University’s second annual Community Wellness Festival.

More than 50 exhibitors will be on hand for the festival, which will be from 9 a.m. to noon at Collins Sports Center, Sixth and Fremont streets. Screenings will test vision, hearing, blood pressure, bone density, body fat, heart rate, flexibility and lung volume.

The event is funded by a Douglas County Community Foundation grant.

Poster series honors Bert Nash artists

A number of local artists will be recognized next month at the 2003 Art of Mental Health Reception and Poster Sale.

The event is set for 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. May 2 at the Lawrence Arts Center, 940 N.H.

A poster series will recognize area artists who have collaborated with the Bert Nash Center for more than 20 years in raising awareness about the relationship between art and mental health.

Posters and note cards will be for sale. All proceeds benefit the Bert Nash Center Endowment Trust Fund.
