Douglas County: 3-year-old boy killed in ATV roll-over accident

A four-wheeler overturned and killed a 3-year-old Topeka boy Thursday night in southwest Douglas County, a sheriff’s official said.

The boy, Richard C. Perkins, was visiting his grandfather’s home in the 100 section of East 300 Road at the time of the accident, said Lt. Kathy Tate, spokeswoman for the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office.

His grandfather, Francis W. Hyer, took him riding on the four-wheeler to check cattle. On the way back, the grandfather stopped the vehicle, turned it off and got down to open a gate, Tate said.

The 3-year-old turned the vehicle back on, and it began moving, Tate said. The grandfather reached for the child but missed him and instead grabbed the vehicle. As the grandfather was being dragged, the ATV hit a rut, flipped and landed on the child.
