Class supported
To the editor:
Rarely have I been moved to write a letter to the editor. The article in the Journal-World regarding Dennis Dailey has moved me to do so.
Several years ago, I audited Dailey’s class “Human Sexuality in Everyday Life.” I took extensive (and yes, explicit!) notes, filling two spiral notebooks. I have shared those notes with so many people over the years that the pages are beginning to appear tattered. People add their own comments in the margins — exclamations of enlightenment, not criticism!
Dailey does not just teach facts. The explicit nature of his teaching method and materials contributes to an acceptance of sexuality as a normal and wonderful part of life. Dailey’s class is a celebration of human sexuality without embarrassment or negativity.
His wisdom is not limited to “human sexuality,” but also extends into “everyday life,” helping students to learn about and strive for healthy and rewarding interpersonal relationships of all sorts.
My only regret is that time constraints and practicality prevent Dailey’s class from being required for every KU student. In fact, I regret that Dailey’s course cannot be available to and required for every person, whether a KU student or not.
As it is, the class is not required and students can opt to drop it. The Legislature should not infringe upon freedom of speech in an institution of higher education.
