KU rounds out list of fine arts dean finalists

Kansas University has announced the last two of five finalists vying to become dean of the School of Fine Arts.

Steve Hedden, dean of the College of Fine Arts at Wichita State University since 2002, and George Arasimowicz, dean of the division of arts in media and communications at Wheaton College in Illinois since 1999, are the fourth and fifth finalists, KU officials announced.

Hedden, who earned bachelor’s, master’s and doctoral degrees from KU, also served in several positions at the University of Arizona from 1987 to 2002, including associate dean of academic affairs and vice dean of academics and research at the College of Fine Arts, interim director of the Peter Treistman Fine Arts Center for New Media, and professor and coordinator of music education.

Hedden’s public presentation will be at 5 p.m. Monday at Swarthout Recital Hall in Murphy Hall.

Arasimowicz previously was dean of the Conservatory of Music at Wheaton and chairman of the department of music at the University of Colorado at Denver.

His public forum will be at 5 p.m. Tuesday, also at Swarthout Recital Hall.

The other finalists for the job are Robert Shay, dean of the College of Fine Arts at the University of Kentucky; Daniel Reeves, dean of the College of Fine Arts at Arkansas State University; and Donald Van Horn, dean of the College of Fine Arts at Marshall University in Huntington, W.Va.

The new dean will replace Toni-Marie Montgomery, who will leave in June to become dean of the School of Music at Northwestern University in Evanston, Ill.
