Governor names new district judge

Olathe -- Gov. Kathleen Sebelius has named lawyer Thomas Sutherland to fill a district judge opening in Johnson County. It was the first such appointment of her administration.

Sutherland, 43, of Lenexa, will fill a position left open by the retirement of William Cleaver. Sutherland, who has specialized in civil practice with the firm Holbrook & Osborn, hopes to begin his new duties by early next month.

Chief Judge Patrick McAnany said Sutherland would take on civil cases.

Store reports robbery

An unidentified man robbed an adult novelty store Tuesday night, Lawrence Police reported.

The man walked into Priscilla's Lingerie & Gifts, 1206 W. 23rd St., shortly before 9 p.m. and demanded money from a clerk, who gave him $140, according to a police report.

The man wore an item on his head to cover his face, Sgt. Mike Pattrick said. He didn't display a weapon or pretend to have a weapon.

A manager at Priscilla's said police were reviewing a video from the store's surveillance camera in attempt to identify the suspect.

Drug crime legislation topic of 'On the Record'

Kansas Atty. Gen. Phill Kline will be featured on this week's edition of "On The Record," a public television news program broadcast at 12:30 p.m. Sunday on KTWU Channel 11.

Kline will discuss recent legislation allowing judges to order rehabilitation instead of incarceration for some drug offenders. Kline argues it will endanger public safety.

Salvation Army offers free children's clothes

The Easter Bunny will help pass out free children's clothes from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday at the Salvation Army, 10th and New Hampshire streets.

Salvation Army administrator Rich Forney said clothes would be given out for children up to age 12. "They're all new things," he said.

The giveaway is sponsored by the Salvation Army Women's Auxiliary.

'Twister' to raise funds

A Kansas University sorority this weekend will use the game Twister to raise money to prevent domestic abuse.

Kappa Delta will host the 11th annual Shamrock Project, which begins at noon Saturday. Teams of two will compete in Twister on the Allen Fieldhouse lawn. Prizes include restaurant gift certificates, stereo and KU merchandise.

The $40 entry fees will go to Prevent Child Abuse America and the local Women's Transitional Care Services.
