Crime: Jeep strikes 5 vehicles; driver arrested, jailed

A Blue Springs, Mo., man was arrested early Saturday after a Jeep driven at high speed struck five vehicles and overturned in a downtown parking lot, Lawrence Police said.

Chase Auer, 19, was arrested about 1 a.m., two blocks from the accident scene in the parking lot at the Lawrence Community Building, 115 W. 11th St., Police Sgt. Susan Hadl said.

The 1997 Jeep had been southbound on Vermont Street and drove through the 11th Street intersection without stopping at a stop sign, Hadl said. The Jeep became airborne after it hit the incline leading into the parking lot, coming to a stop on its side after striking the other vehicles, Hadl said. No one was in the other vehicles.

Auer wasn’t hurt in the accident and was taken to the Douglas County Jail on municipal court citations for driving under the influence, driving with a suspended license, no proof of insurance, leaving the scene of an accident and failing to stop at a stop sign, Hadl said. He was being held Saturday on $1,200 bond.
