Police identify two killed in Wichita

? Police said a man chased down his girlfriend’s former husband, shot and killed him in a parking lot, then took his own life before officers could stop him.

The men who died Wednesday were identified by police Thursday as Scott A. Smith, 34, the former husband, and his assailant, Eric S. Leckenby, 29.

Frightened neighbors and business owners watched the developments from their windows.

Police said Smith was dropping off his children at his ex-wife’s home about 7 a.m. Wednesday when the boyfriend confronted him with a gun.

Neighbor Karen Radell said she awoke to gunshots.

“I looked out the window and saw a man standing across the street with his arms out and palms up,” she said. “He was backing away from the other man.”

Police said the boyfriend fired at and chased the ex-husband across the street, through a sloping ditch and muddy stream, and into a church parking lot.

Margie Dixon, co-owner of a nearby Dairy Queen, said she heard two shouting voices through the drive-through speaker that an employee had inadvertently left on overnight. Through the drive-through window she saw both men just yards away.

One man chased the other around a strip mall and confronted him again on the sidewalk in front of an electronics store.

“I went to call police and heard the shots,” Dixon said. “I looked back and the one man was lying on the ground.”

She said the other man sat down next to the body.

“He sat there looking at him like he expected him to get up,” she said. “Then he kept looking back at me and then at the other guy again.”

The 911 dispatcher told her to get away from the window, she said. As police swarmed toward the man, he shot himself.

Both Smith and Leckenby were pronounced dead at a hospital.
