Positive class

To the editor:

I am writing to express my disappointment in Kansas Sen. Susan Wagle’s sponsorship of an amendment that passed in the Senate last week claiming Dennis Dailey’s human sexuality course at Kansas University displays inappropriate pornographic material.

As a student at KU, I can testify that this course has had a positive impact on the lives of many students here. In the United States and in many other countries, the number of teen pregnancies, the spread of sexually transmitted diseases and the spread of HIV can all be traced back to our society’s inability to talk frankly and honestly about sex. Without education and open discussion about sex, these problems can never be solved.

It is sad to think that as a woman, Wagle would not see the importance of a class that approaches these topics so that we can begin to understand and work toward a solution to problems such as sexual violence against women.

I hope that she will reconsider her stance on this issue for the benefit of all her constituents and the students at Kansas University.
